The Men of Gridiron

Fall, 1922: Gridiron Club formed at Phillips University to foster a hearty relationship between athletes and students.
Fall, 1933: Phillips University drops football but Gridiron continues as first men's social service club on Phillips' campus.
Fall, 1998: Phillips University closes its doors forever.
This site is dedicated to the eight decades of Men of Gridiron lest we “forget the bond that binds us heart to heart.”

Minutes of Gridiron Club Called Meeting

In the absence of President Ryan Epley, the meeting was called to order by Tom Walker, Class of '68. Charlie Babb, Class of '74, gave the invocation. Present, at the meeting, or the ice breaker the night before, or both were:

Charlie Babb '74, Dave Bank '67, Sean Brannon '95, Dick Castle '53, David Danielson '61, Mike Dickey '68, George England '42, Steve England '68, Dennis Fletcher '68, Dick Galusha '54, Harley Galusha '52, Dave Gray '65, Del Hamm '53, Charles Hennen '63, Brian Hinrichs '95, Jim Holland '68, John Hynson '70, Tom Jaworsky '68, Leo Johnson '65, Brent Mackey (Sponsor), John Martin '68, Scott McKinney '94, Greg McMahan '75, H.A. McNiff '56, Harry Millard '57, Herb Moore '54, Matt Nelson '94, Doyle Newsom '68, Terry O'Hara '66, Jon Oliver '73, Justin Phillips '92, Matt Price '90, Fred Randall '66, Ellis Randolph '71, Tom Sanders ' 68, Dan Saylor '74, Bill Shore '57, Russ Stacey '58, Erik Thomas '95, Jerry Thompson '54, Tom Walker '68, Don Worley '68, Jim Worley '57.

Memorabilia included approximately 30 yearbooks, several paddles, two pledge manuals, two pledge books, four photo albums, miscellaneous 8x10 photos, four maroon and white club jackets, three black club jackets, club tee shirts and sweatshirts and the emblem worn by charter member Dr. Steve England on the original club jacket (the jacket before the maroon and white corduroy jacket). Several members wore their Gridiron pins.

Reading of the minutes was tabled until the next meeting. (They are MIA).

Dick Castle, Class of '53, reported on the activities of the Phillips University Alumni and Friends Association. (Several members drove to Enid that morning to attend the business meeting of that organization. FYI more Gridiron members attended than any other men's organization.)

George England, Class of '42, as the senior member present, was given the floor to make whatever comments he deemed appropriate. He remarked briefly on the founding of Gridiron, as recounted to him by his father and charter member, Dr. Stephen J. England.

Old business: none.

New business: The chair announced the following lists are available as works in progress:
  • master roster of all members

  • roster of current members with contact information

  • sponsors

  • sweethearts

  • pledge classes

  • military veterans

For those present they were compiled in a booklet form. He asked all present to take a copy and report corrections or additions.

By unanimous consent, the NEXT MEETING was scheduled for 2007 in Enid, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the founding of Phillips.

The meeting was adjourned by circle and song - the Alma Mater and Gridiron Song. (The chair neglected to ask if any sweethearts were present, and did not learn until after the meeting that one from the '90s was in attendance. By then it was too late to sing the sweetheart song.)

Respectfully submitted,
Tom Walker '68
